Why Don’t Your Happiest Athletes Recommend You?

Your happiest athletes probably want to recommend you.

The problem is that most coaches make themselves harder to refer than they realise.

In this episode, I talk about why referrals often break down even when your athletes genuinely love the coaching. It usually isn’t because they aren’t talking about you. It’s because they don’t have a clear way to explain who you’re for, what you offer, what it costs, or how someone should get started.

We also look at why your website can accidentally kill a warm referral, why timing matters more than simply asking for referrals, and how breakthrough races, big training wins and other key moments create natural opportunities for athletes to talk about their coach.

This isn’t about turning yourself into a marketer or constantly asking athletes to promote you.

It’s about removing friction so the people who already believe in what you do can easily introduce the right people to your coaching.

In this episode:

👉 Why referral volume probably isn’t the real problem

🎯 The questions your athletes need to be able to answer about your coaching

🌐 How unclear pricing, positioning and availability can kill a warm lead

⏱️ Why referrals tend to happen around specific moments

🤝 How to make it easier for athletes to recommend you without being pushy

💡 A simple exercise to find the gaps in how people currently describe your coaching

Takeaway: Ask one of your longest-standing athletes what they would say if a friend asked them to describe what you do. Their answer will tell you a lot about how easy, or difficult, you currently are to refer.
